Effective communication access depends on a variety of factors, and is definitely not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ process.

The best way to determine what approach to communication access will be effective is to ask the individual with whom you want to communicate.  Each individual is the expert on their own hearing loss, and can advise you on what works well and what is ineffective.

Effective approaches to communication access may include:

  • Signed Language Interpreters – see more information here.
  • Realtime Captioning
  • Assistive Listening Devices such as FM Systems
  • Loop Systems
  • Digital Hearing Aids – controlled by smartphone application
  • Written communication
  • Tactile communication (for Deaf-Blind individuals)
